HRV: Definition in Medicine
Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to the variation over time in the intervals between consecutive heartbeats (RR intervals in the electrocardiogram). It is an established parameter for assessing autonomic cardiovascular regulation.
HRV results from the dynamic balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system. Higher HRV is generally associated with stronger parasympathetic (vagal) modulation and greater physiological adaptability.
In clinical and experimental research, HRV serves as an indirect marker of stress load, cardiovagal function, the regulatory capacity of the cardiovascular system, and general physiological resilience. Reduced HRV values, by contrast, are often described in connection with chronic stress, cardiac conditions, and limited autonomic flexibility.
